Farm Faithfully, Garden Gratefully: Progressive Women and their Influence in the Landscape — 1900-1940, a one-day symposium, held jointly with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University, will highlight the role of American women who designed and maintained significant landscapes during the beginning of the 20th century. The day will conclude with a full “Tea” hosted by the Ambler Keystone Branch of the Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association. Symposium speakers will include: Judith B. Tankard — “Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes;” CeCe Haydock — “Edith Wharton, The Europhile: Influencing American Gardens;” Elaine Weiss — “Fruits of Victory: The Woman’s Land Army of America in the Great War;” Marta McDowell — “Ladies’ Mantle: The Garden Club in the Garden State;” and Jenny Rose Carey, Director of the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University. At the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, students and faculty in Temple University Ambler’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture will demonstrate the transformation of urban landscapes into diverse ecosystems where a variety of plant and animal species coexist. Temple’s exhibit, “METROmorphosis — Transforming the Urban World,” meshes perfectly with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s 2010 Flower Show theme, “Passport to the World.” Inspired by green and sustainable responses to the environmental problems associated with rapid urbanization around the globe, students in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture’s Junior Design Studio and Horticulture Directed Studies program will present creative and practical applications for small urban spaces. More than 12,000 visitors will mark Earth Day at Temple University Ambler celebrating the importance of protecting the environment and preserving their future. More than 90 exhibitors, including the Philadelphia Zoo, The Franklin Institute, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Elmwood Park Zoo, Adventure Aquarium, and the Insectarium will take part in EarthFest 2010! School students of all ages are invited to attend and develop displays of their own. EarthFest partner the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society also offers their Kids Grow Expo, featuring the Junior Flower Show, as part of the event.
