Dr. Flamm joined the department of Community and Regional Planning faculty in Fall 2007 as an Assistant Professor.
He teaches transportation planning, planning methods, history and practice of community and regional planning, and sustainable development courses. His research interests are focused on travel behavior and on the environmental and energy impacts of transportation systems and shared and non-motorized forms of transportation (including patterns of bicycle commuting, his preferred mode of transportation from his home in Philadelphia to the Ambler campus).
His current research efforts have included sustainability audits, greenhouse gas emissions inventories, and climate change action plans for ten communities in Montgomery, Bucks, and Delaware Counties, PA. He studies the relationship between environmental attitudes and vehicle ownership and travel behavior related to multi-modal bicycle and transit use.
Dr. Flamm has recently published articles in Transportation Research Part D: Transportation and the Environment, Environmental Management, the Journal of Transport History and the Berkeley Planning Journal. He was the lead author for a research report on constraints to sustainable vehicle ownership released by the Mineta Transportation Institute in the spring of 2011, and he has written policy briefs, online reports, and conference papers. In addition, as the chair of the Transportation Sub-Committee of Temple University’s Sustainability Task Force, he co-authored a university-wide action plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from university-related commuting, vehicle fleets, and business travel.
Active in his profession, Dr. Flamm has served on many boards and policy committees, including the Ambler Campus Sustainability Council, the City of Cleveland Heights, Ohio’s Visioning Committee, the Friends of Cameroon in the United States, and Alt-Trans Cleveland. He has worked on projects for the United States Agency for International Development, the United Nations’ World Food Program, the U.S. Peace Corps, and EcoCity Cleveland, a non-profit environmental planning organization in Northeast Ohio. He is professionally affiliated with the Transportation Research Board, the American Planning Association, and the International Society for the Study of the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility.
Dr. Flamm completed his PhD in City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a Master in Regional Planning degree from Cornell University and a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley.
