EarthFest 2008 Celebration
Planning Playground
The 12,000 students and community members who visited the campus on
EarthFest spent time learning and having fun in the planning
playground. They learned activities such as how one can make art out
of recyclables. Robots, flowers, space creations, dolls, and jewelry
were all created using aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newspaper
wrappings and more. They found there is so much potential using food
containers and packaging to make things one can use, play with and
have fun. Students also learned how to read a map, plan a town,
understand land-use, and incorporate sustainable living into everyday
life. The Planning Playground will be featured again next year in 2009
as the staff of the Center for Sustainable Communities, the Department
of Community and Regional Planning, the Ambler Campus Sustainability
Council, and the Temple Planning Society all love to help young minds
see the future through planning! |

What is Sustainability? |

By
Dr.
Jeffrey Featherstone
Director, Center for Sustainable Communities
While scholars have debated the nature of sustainability and have
outlined numerous, sometimes ponderous definitions of it, we can
simply accept its basic tenets. In short, sustainability means
protecting and managing our natural resources so they are available
for future generations. It also means that in promoting
sustainability we must give careful and thoughtful consideration to
the environmental, economic, and social aspects of alternative
courses of action so advances in one area do not come at the expense
of the others.
