Center for Sustainable Communities

Joseph Michael Kelly is an architect, technologist, and construction manager in private practice. His experience involves a wide range of architectural design activities and the design of engineering systems incidental to the practice of architecture. He is based in Greenville, SC, and Philadelphia and divides his time between practice and research. His architectural approach is primarily scientific in outlook and is distinguished by its sensitive, ecological, humanistic, and resonant response of indigenous tradition. His current research focus is on the use of architectural techniques for energy conservation: building form and fabric, daylighting and natural ventilation, integrated design, health and comfort in the indoor environment and the broader environmental impact of the technology of ecological building.

Mr. Kelly graduated from Southern Polytechnic State University with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering Technology, University of Wisconsin-Madison with a P.D. in Engineering and Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, with a Master of Science in Building Services Engineering. He is a Registered Architect in the states of Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Mr. Kelly is a member of the Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI), Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI), Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), and certified by the National Council Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
