Milford Township Growth Management Plan

Overview: In August 2003, the Milford Township Supervisors approved the Center for Sustainable Communities and the Department of Community and Regional Planning (CRP) to assist the township in preparing a Growth Management Plan. The $80,000 project, funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant received by the township, was conducted by students in the CRP graduate student studios and Center researchers.

The project was a broad-based, two-semester examination of water and land resources, open space, transportation, stormwater management, sewerage, and impacts of potential future development on township revenues and expenditures.

Status: The final project document, developed by students in the CRP studios in Fall 2003 and Spring 2004, was completed and submitted to the Milford Township Board of Supervisors from review in August 2004.

The Smart Growth Plan documents how smart growth — development in close proximity to existing transportation and infrastructure — is a more cost effective solution for municipalities. Recommendations presented by the plan include adopting more stringent environmental safeguards, including zoning and regulations to more aggressively protect floodplains, steep slopes, wellhead areas, woodlands, and wetlands. A proposed stormwater management ordinance was also submitted.

The recommendations presented in the Growth Management Plan are presently under review by the Milford Township Supervisors for future implementation.
