Reminder: The EarthFest Main Stage is located toward the back of the Ambler Campus (Exhibit Area 3 on the event map). It may take you a little longer to walk there, so plan accordingly!

Philadelphia Zoo

“Tree Dwellers

The Philadelphia Zoo’s animals don’t just stay in Philadelphia! Through the Zoo’s “Zoo On Wheels” program, traveling naturalists bring animals and bio-facts to students from pre-school through 12th grade for an educational and exciting encounter with wildlife! Be a part of the Zoo on Wheels!

The Philadelphia Zoo is home to over 1,300 animals from around the world, many rare and endangered. Welcoming more than one million visitors each year from throughout the region and beyond, the Zoo serves children and families as a unique and engaging public resource for wildlife conservation and education.

Presentation: Air Quality Partnership Awards

Presented to: Philadelphia Air Management Services and Shire Pharmaceuticals

 

At EarthFest 2012, the Air Quality Partnership, a program of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commissions, will recognize partners that have “gone above and beyond” in their efforts to increase awareness about air pollution or taken steps to decrease air pollution.

The Air Quality Partnership has been a longtime sponsor of EarthFest and has participated in all 10 EarthFest events!

 

11:00 a.m.

Wondergy

“CoolScience”

Hammer a nail into solid wood with a banana? Blow up a balloon ... from the outside? Wondergy will help you explore how matter changes from solid to liquid to gas with liquid nitrogen.

At 320 degrees below zero, it’s the coolest stuff around!

Topics of this fascinating presentation will include: molecules, thermal motion, heat transfer, air pressure, density, physical changes, and more!

Presentation: “Commitment to Sustainability Award”

Presented to: Wordsworth Interact Club

The Commitment to Sustainability Award is presented each year to a school, student organization, or educator that has shown an exemplary commitment to the environment and environmental stewardship through educational programs, events, and grassroots initiatives.  

The 2012 recipient is the Wordsworth Interact Club at Wordsworth Fort Washington!

Presentation: EarthFest
"10 for 10"

Celebrating our longtime EarthFest exhibitors.

As Temple University Ambler and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society celebrate the 10th annual EarthFest, we want to take this opportunity to highlight 10 of our dedicated exhibitors who have supported EarthFest from the very beginning.

The “EarthFest 10 for 10” will be presented with special Certificates of Appreciation on the EarthFest Main Stage.

Honorees include: Air Quality Partnership — Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC); Elmwood Park Zoo; Dow Chemical Company; Department of Conversation and Natural  Resources (DCNR); PECO Energy; Upper Dublin High School; Philadelphia Zoo; Philadelphia Water Department; Waste Management; Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); U.S. EPA, Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Franklin Institute

“The Energy Show”

What is energy, and how is it used to power everything from power plants to your body?

In "The Energy Show," the Franklin Institute will demonstrate how different kinds of energy can be transformed from one to another including kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, potential and stored. They will then put them together to form one large energy transfer machine.

This Main Stage program will explore the science concepts of transformation of energy, thermodynamics and the law of conservation.

Franklin Institute Traveling Science Shows are designed to involve students in discovering new aspects of science. All generate an infectious enthusiasm that spills over into the classroom!

Presentation: Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Junior Flower Show Awards

Presented by: Pam Snyder, Chair, Junior Flower Show, and Drew Becher, President, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

The Junior Flower Show is a horticultural exhibition by and for school age children in the greater Philadelphia region.

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as an educational project, the Junior Flower Show creates an awareness of horticulture and the natural environment and encourages active participation of youth in growing, gardening, and related activities.

The Junior Flower theme for 2012, "H2O: How to Grow," will intrigue and inspire classroom gardeners and scientists through a variety of water-related classroom projects.  

The Junior Flower Show partners with Temple University Ambler EarthFest allowing youngsters to celebrate Earth Day with a number of activities and interactive displays related to environmental awareness.

Author and Filmmaker Paul Tukey

"Get Outside and Play Lawn Games"

It's time to get back outside and play!

At EarthFest, journalist, author and filmmaker Paul Tukey will be on hand to help reintroduce kids to the fun of outdoor play.

Winner of the prestigious Horticultural Communicator of the Year Award from the American Horticultural Society, Mr. Tukey will lead visitors in a variety of lawn games at EarthFest in addition to an important message about getting up off the couch and getting back outside!

 

1:10 p.m.

Elmwood Park Zoo

“Animal Ambassadors”

The Elmwood Park Zoo will present a half hour live animal show called "Animal Ambassadors" in addition to presenting interactive "animal biofacts" at their exhibitor booth that help promote the zoo's mission - to foster an appreciation of wildlife and their habitats that will ensure active participation in conservation.

The United Nations has declared 2011-2012 the International Year of the Bat to draw attention to the plight of these misunderstood but ecologically vital creatures. Bats are in danger of disappearing due to threats from disease, loss of habitat, and wind turbine collisions. Stop by the Elmwood Park Zoo booth to learn more about these fascinating animals and why they are so essential to the health of our natural world.

 

Garden Tours will depart from the "Planting the Seeds of Learning" tent near the Hilda Justice Building at 10 a.m. and noon. PLEASE SEE YOUR EVENT MAP FOR DETAILS.

 

EarthFest Arbor Day Tree Planting: To celebrate Arbor Day and our continued support of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Plant One Million Campaign, Temple University Ambler and the Pi Alpha Xi student organization will plant a tree at 1 p.m. Those interested in taking part in the tree planting should meet at the “Planting the Seeds of Learning” tent, located in Exhibitor Area 1.
