Two ramps along the southbound side of the Route 309 Expressway in Upper Dublin Township, Montgomery County, will close to traffic on Tuesday, July 17 and remain shut until 2009 for the reconstruction of the ramps and the four-lane expressway between Highland Avenue and Route 63 (Welsh Road), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

Construction crews will work from 9 p.m. Tuesday (July 17) to 5 a.m. Wednesday (July 18) to close the southbound Route 309 off-ramp to Butler Pike and the Susquehanna Road on-ramp to southbound Route 309.

During the ramp closures, detours will be posted for motorists to follow. They are:

  • During the closure of the southbound Route 309 off-ramp to Butler Pike ramp, traffic will be detoured south on Bethlehem Pike to Butler Pike.
  • During the closure of the Susquehanna Road on-ramp to southbound Route 309, traffic will be detoured to the Norristown Road/Spring House Interchange by following Susquehanna Road to Fort Washington Avenue east to Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) north to Norristown Road.

In addition, the Butler Pike on-ramp to northbound Route 309 in Upper Dublin Township also is scheduled to close later this month for reconstruction.

Detour routes for the closed ramps may be viewed and downloaded at PennDOT’s website for the 309 Improvement Project: http://www.309online.com/detours.

PennDOT advises motorists to allow additional time for travel along these detours because backups and delays may occur.  All planned activities are weather dependent.

In addition to the upcoming ramp closures, motorists traveling on this northern section of Route 309 will encounter off-peak daytime and overnight lane closures and shifting traffic patterns over the next three years as crews rebuild this part of the expressway.

PennDOT will begin construction on Monday (July 16) to rebuild the northern part of the expressway in Upper Dublin and Lower Gwynedd townships. This is the fourth and final mainline contract to move into construction for PennDOT’s $350 million project to reconstruct the 10-mile long expressway. Work on the northern end is scheduled to finish in mid-2010.

Lane closures on southbound Route 309 are scheduled to be in place Monday (July 16) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for line painting operations from the expressway’s northern entry point in Lower Gwynedd through the Highland Avenue Interchange.  If painting work is not completed that day, lane restrictions will be in place again on Tuesday, July 17 beginning at 9 a.m.
