August 16, 2011
WHERE: Temple University Ambler, 580 Meetinghouse Road
WHEN: Monday, August 29, through Friday, September 2
When students begin classes for the Fall 2011 semester at Temple University Ambler, they will be met with a special week-long celebration.
Temple University has planned a University-wide Welcome Week for students to help them start the year off right by meeting new friends, having fun, and acclimating to their new environment — be it the Ambler campus, the Main Campus, or Temple Japan.
“The Week of Welcome is a way for the campus to welcome all of the new and returning students,” said Dr. Wanda Lewis-Campbell, Assistant Dean for Student Life at Ambler. “It gives them a period of spirit and fun as they begin their academic year.”
On Monday, August 29 — the first day of classes — and Tuesday, August 30, the commons in front of the Ambler Learning Center will be filled with informative booths featuring the campus student organizations and departments. Monday and Tuesday’s Outdoor Festival will also feature vendors, music, free giveaways and snacks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ambler Executive Director William Parshall will host the “Campus Barbeque” beginning at Noon on August 29 to welcome students, faculty and staff back to campus.
Week of Welcome at Ambler will also include several Transitioning to Temple and Student Welcome events, throughout the week.
On Monday, August 29, a Veteran Student Welcome will be held at 5 p.m. in Bright Hall Room 110E. This special program for students who have served or are currently serving in the military will include food, information, and important advice to help ensure a smooth transition to the classroom.
Transitioning to Temple/Adult Student Welcome programs — special events for adult students to help them return to the classroom — will be held on Wednesday, August 31, and Thursday, September 1, at Noon and 5 p.m., in Bright Hall Lounge.
“These events are meant to give students — adults, veterans, freshmen and transfer students — a chance to meet each other and make new friends in a completely informal setting,” said Lauren Bullock, Coordinator for Student Activities. “The events do have a loose format to get students to connect with several other new students.”
Workshops to help new and returning student leaders prepare for a successful year will also be held on Monday, August 29 and Tuesday, August 30, at 4 p.m., in Bright Hall Room 106.
On Thursday, September 1, at 5 p.m., a shuttle bus leaving from Temple University Ambler will take students, faculty, and staff — all appropriately clad in Temple Cherry and White — to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to see the Temple Owls take on Villanova for the “Mayor’s Cup” during the Owls season opener. Students must bring Temple ID. Please park in the Commuter Parking Lot near the Baseball Fields. The bus will pick you up near the Ambler Athletics Field House toward the top of the Commuter Lot. Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to departure to ensure arrival at the stadium prior to the start of the game.
